'.pa
'.bl2.pf8.ceINSTALLATION
'.bl2.pf0.in5.fi
'.pf0.in5.fi
'Installation is simple, and, in the case of this trial disk, a futile
'but necessary exercise. Since HealthAide is color specific, your
'color choices are ignored in favor ot the colors hard-coded into the
'program. However, the program will not function without the files
'"SETUP.DEF" and "PERSONAL.DAT" being created on your program disk.
'Installation is included in anticipation of your registration and receipt
'of all the free programs which do use your colors in some of
'them. Also, the PERSONAL.DAT file is essential to other programs
'in the total Anthology. The theory is that most users of this
'trial disk will want the other programs in the Anthology which have
'a value in excess of $100.00 and which fully registered owners receive
'free. Therefore, the Installation program is included for the many,
'not the few.
'.bl1.in5
'Installation begins with designating a default data drive. This is the
'drive to which the program will look to find data files. If you copied
'the program and data files to a hard drive, your default will be DRIVE
'"C" (or other designator which you may have indicated). Users with 2
'floppy drive systems will use DRIVE "B". Some programs
'in the Anthology, including HealthAide, allow you to change
'the data drive to A, B or C while in that particular program. At
'start-up, however, the default drive set in the installation procedure
'is re-established. Paths are not yet supported.
'.bl1.in5
'Next, you select your color scheme. As has been noted, your selections
'will not be used by HealthAide. HealthAide starts with a foreground
'of bright white (color 15), a background of blue (color 1) and a border
'of red (color 4). You may as well enter those numbers for now.
'When you finish with color selection, the colors will be displayed and
'the question asked, "Is this OK (Y/N)". Press "Y" and continue.
'"PRESS" N for "DISPLAY INSTRUCTION LINES".
'.bl1.pf6.nf
'.ceDO NOT `ESCAPE' FROM THE INITIAL INSTALLATION PROCESS!
'.bl1.pf0.fi
'You will next be asked about your name, address and what your friends
'call you. You may use upper and/or lower case letters for this data.
'"Escape" allows for future color changes without re-entering your
'personal data.
'.bl1.in5
'After you have filled in your name, address, etc., you will be given a
'a chance to correct any errors so don't worry about interim mistakes.
'When you answer "Y" for all correct, you get into the program.
'.pa
'.bl2.pf8.nf.ceFORWARD
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'HealthAide is not a "diet plan" per se. At least, not in the sense
'that you must follow a dictated eating regimen or eat special foods
'or powders. Rather, it is a program to help you measure the
'nutritive value of the foods you eat and provide guidance for healthy
'eating.
'.bl1.pf3.in5
'If, as they say, "we are what we eat" then we should "know what we eat".
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'The suggestions and analyses presented in the program are based on
'recommendations of experts such as the American Cancer Society, the
'American Heart Association, published experts and publications of
'the United States Department of Agriculture and The Human Nutrition
'Information Service. The aim of HealthAide is to help you to limit
'your consumption of fat, particularly saturated fat, cholesterol
'and sodium while increasing your intake of fiber and complex
'carbohydrates in accordance with these recommendations. HealthAide
'measures your daily intake of vitamins, fiber, cholesterol, minerals,
'electrolytes, fats, protein, carbohydrates, sodium and even some trace
'minerals. It performs a analysis of your personal profile toward
'reaching your ideal weight whether you need to gain or lose weight.
'.bl1.in5
'The idea is to help you to, knowledgeably, change your eating habits
'and reach your ideal weight gradually without depending upon expensive,
'often dangerous, powders, pills, packaged foods and other "fad" diets.
'A gradual change in weight is preferable for many reasons.
'.bl1.in5
'Going "on a diet" presupposes that one day you will "go off the diet".
'If the diet was effective in losing or gaining weight, what do you
'suppose will happen when you resume your normal eating habits ?
'There are other considerations such as, are you clogging your arteries
'by eating too much fat and cholesterol ? Are you getting sufficient
'amounts of vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates and protein?
'And what about protein - are your eating too much? Protein can make
'you fat and too much protein may damage
'your kidneys. According to some experts, complex carbohydrates should
'be the largest percentage of your total calories. Do you have a clue
'where you stand on this important nutrient ? Finally, there's "demon
'sodium". Virtually everyone knows that sodium is a contributing
'factor to hypertension (high blood pressure).
'.pa
'.bl1.in5
'Well now you have a tool that will do all the drudge work for you.
'Before I wrote this program, I kept track of only 3 factors - calories,
'saturated fat and cholesterol - and I had to do it all by hand.
'After losing 45 pounds in six months and halving my cholesterol and
'triglyceride counts, I began to wonder about other nutrients I might
'be missing. That much data cannot be handled by hand. So, I spent
'several hundred dollars on reference materials and set to work. This
'is the result of a year of study and programming.
'.bl1.pf6.in5
'The effectiveness of this program depends upon the degree of your
'commitment. This program, no diet, no spa nor anything else will work
'to improve your "physical vehicle" until you get serious about it - I
'did not say "fanatical". (Health nuts can be verrrrry boring - kind of
'like "jogging junkies").
'.bl1.pf6.in5
'Remember: Healthy people look better, feel better, live longer, smile
'more; wear a better cut of clothes; drive a nicer car; and attract
'higher quality members of the opposite sex. I can't wait to get
'healthy...uh, healthier!
'.bl1.pf0
'Good Luck, and thanks for making this effort worthwhile.
'.bl2
'.ceFred Parker
'.pa
'.bl1.pf8
'.ceCONVENTIONS AND OVER-VIEW
'.bl2.pf0.fi
'There are a few conventions used through-out the program. For instance,
'at the prompt to:
'.bl1.pf3.ce"PRESS" a number (or Press a Function Key)
'.bl1.pf0.fi.in5
'That means you only have to depress the key of your choice - without
'pressing "ENTER" (or C/R-to some) afterward. Hereafter, we will use
'"ENTER" to indicate the carriage return key.
'.bl1.in5
'On the otherhand, when you are prompted to:
'.bl1.pf3.ce"ENTER" a number
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'That means you must depress the key(s) of your selection followed by
'depressing "ENTER" before the selection is accepted.
'.bl1.in5
'On many occasions, you will be offered multiple choices such as, PgUp,
'PgDn, Home, End, Escape, Function Key(s) and a number or "Y/N" entry.
'All but the number entry are "immediate response" - not requiring you
'to press "ENTER". Generally, any choice which requires only a single
'key entry will be immediate response. Where exceptions occur, it will
'be pointed out in the manual at the appropriate places. Always, when
'making a "MENU SELECTION" that may require a two key entry (depending
'upon your choice), your entry must be followed by "ENTER". One finger
'and a maximum of three keystrokes will move you through the program.
'.bl1.pf6.nf
'ABBREVIATIONS
'.bl1.pf0.in10
'Tsp = Teaspoon
'.in10
'TBSP = Tablespoon
'.in10
'Cup = 8 ounce Cup
'.in10
'oz. = ounce(s)
'.in10
'g = gram
'.in10
'mg = milligram
'.in10
'mcg = microgram
'.in10
'IU = International Units
'.bl1.in5.fi
'Other abbreviations, I hope, are self-explanatory. In some cases, a
'nutrient (or non-nutrient) may be abbreviated, in which case the first
'four letters of the name is used such as, SODI for Sodium.
'.bl1.in5
'Some USRDA quantities have been converted to a different - but equal -
'measure to more effectively display a meaningful food value in the food
'lists. For instance, the trace mineral, Selenium, was converted from
'milligrams to micrograms to obtain a whole number instead of a four
'decimal point figure and to maintain consistency through-out.
'.pa
'.bl1.in5
'Serving sizes, in some cases, have been adjusted to reflect a realistic
'quantity. (Who do you know who eats a 2.35 oz. serving of anything?)
'.bl1.in5
'Where a food is listed as a group, such as "Colas, Diet", these values
'have been averaged among generic and popular brands, weighted to reflect
'a median value and rounded for display purposes. In other words, many
'foods and groups of foods have been extrapolated, interpolated, averaged,
'rounded, "ball-parked", "swagged" and codified. Food values vary widely
'depending upon climatic and soil conditions, feed, recipes, etc.. In
'spite of all this, the food values contained in the databases are
'believed to be a close approximation and reasonable for our purposes.
'.bl1.in5.nf
'Food titles are grouped and sorted by type and actual name:
'.bl1.pf3.ceCheese, Cheddar
'.bl1.pf0.fi
'This allows similar food types to be kept together during the sorting
'process. The second field, TYPE/PREP, indicates the particular type
'or brand of the food and/or how it is prepared.
'.bl1.pf3
'Trademark names of Brand Name Manufacturers included in some of the
'food items are for identification only and do not represent an
'endorsement of any product. "Generic" means not a brand name.
'.bl1.pf8
'.ceOVER-VIEW
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'HealthAide is, essentially, a database manager and text formatter
'with calculating ability. It consists of 12 food databases and 4 text
'"brief" files. There is a profile analysis and 6 "MENUS".
'.bl1.in5
'The first menu presented is the HealthAide Menu. From these choices
'you can access any of the files in the HealthAide program that you
'own. Option 5, on this menu, "Food File Maintenance", will be
'available to you when you register and receive the 6 free programs.
'.bl1.in5
'Option 1, "PROFILE ANALYSIS", lets you enter pertinent, personal data
'which is analyzed based on height, weight, gender, age and activity
'level and produces your personal weight and health control and
'nutrition guide.
'.bl1.in5
'Option 2, "ENTER DAILY CONSUMPTION", lets you select foods that you have
'consumed from the databases of 12 groups of foods; keeps a running
'total of 33 nutritional elements; displays your total consumption on
'request; allows you to average several days; highlights foods on the
'list in colors of a traffic signal - green, yellow and red; totals
'flash warnings in two colors, either yellow or red, when you reach
'certain levels of saturated fat, cholesterol or sodium; automatically
'displays fat content, of individual foods selected, as a percentage of
'total calories.
'.bl1.in5
'Option 3, "NUTRITION BRIEFS", gives you basic information on fat,
'cholesterol, fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, alcohol, amino acids,
'electrolytes, calories and carbohydrates. Vitamins and Minerals give
'you 12 specific choices each to view.
'.bl1.in5
'Option 4, "USRDAS", displays the table of United States Recommended
'Daily Allowances and Considered Safe and Adequate quantities.
'.bl1.in5
'Option 5, "Food File Maintenance", requires FoodAide(tm), which is
'available free to fully registered owners. With this program you can
'easily customize the food databases to incorporate your personal
'preferences of foods and the values of your own recipes. Adding
'your own recipe values cuts down on input time.
'.bl1.in5
'Option 6, "OTHER PROGRAMS MENU", allows you direct access to all other
'programs in the free package, change the data drive and
'exit the program to D.O.S..
'.bl1.in5
'Option 7, "EXIT TO D.O.S.", does exactly that.
'.bl1.pf3.in5.fi
'The options in this menu are "immediate response" (fractional second
'delay is immediate) and do not require you to press "ENTER".
'.bl1.pf6.nf.in5
'Now let's get specific about program operation.....
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'At your D.O.S. prompt, and with your PROGRAM DISK in DRIVE A and your
'DATA DISK in DRIVE B (Hard drive users will be in the "HA" directory),
'type:
'.ce HA (and press "ENTER")
'.bl1.in5.fi
'The first screen you see will be a reminder about the food values in

'.bl2.pf0.in5.fi
'If you have not already set up your profile, select option "1" from
'the HealthAide Menu. A little bit of magic and you see the series of
'personal questions needed for the Profile Analysis. The questions
'marked with an asterisk (*) require an answer. The first of these
'questions is:
'.bl1.pf3.ceCurrent Weight
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'You will be allowed to "ENTER" up to 4 whole numbers. If you weigh,
'for instance, 180.5 (180 1/2) pounds, you are going to have to "ENTER"
'either 180 or 181.
'.bl1.nf.in5
'The cursor will move to the next question:
'.bl1.pf6.ceHeight in inches
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'Here you must convert your height, in feet and inches, to inches. Four
'feet is 48 inches, 5 feet is 60 inches, 6 feet is 72 inches (12x#feet).
'Add to that the number of remaining inches. For example, a person who
'is 5 ft. 9 in. tall is 69 inches tall. "ENTER" your height in inches.
'.bl1.in5.nf
'The next question is:
'.bl1.pf6.ceFrame Size
'.bl1.pf0.fi.in5
'You will just have to "wing it" on this. If in doubt, "ENTER" M (for
'medium). Only the letters S, M and L will be accepted.
'.bl1.in5.fi
'Now don't fib to the computer on this next question - it's important.
'.pf6.ceCurrent Age
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'The analysis is adjusted for age so you must be honest. "ENTER" your
'age at your last birthday.
'.bl1.in5.nf
'The following is a guide to the next question:
'.bl1.pf6.ceActivity Level
'.bl1.nf
'LEVEL 1
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'You are a sedentary office worker or an inactive homemaker who gets
'little or no regular exercise.
'.bl1.pf6.nf
'LEVEL 2
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'You have an inactive job but occasionally do light exercise (walking).
'Work may involve infrequent stair climbing, etc..
'.bl1.pf6.nf
'LEVEL 3
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'You have an active job, get some daily exercise and jog or play sports
'once or twice a week.
'.bl1.pf6.nf
'LEVEL 4
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'You exercise vigorously every week, your job requires heavy physical
'work, you are constantly on-the-go.
'.bl1.pf6.nf
'LEVEL 5
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'You are an amateur athlete in training for the Olympics or a professional
'athlete who trains year-around. You jog ten miles daily,
'do daily vigorous physical training or your work involves heavy physical
'labor.
'.bl1.in5.nf
'"ENTER" the number of the level that best describes you.
'.bl1.in5.fi
'The next question elicits a "M" (for Male) or "F" (for female) response:
'.bl1.pf6.ceSEX (M/F)
'.bl1.pf0.in5.nf
'"ENTER" only "M" or "F" (without the quotes).
'.bl1.in5.fi
'The rest of the questions do not require an answer. If you don't know
'the answer, just press "ENTER" for each. If you have been to your
'Doctor and have had a lipid profile blood test, you may know what your
'cholesterol numbers are. If you do, and enter them, HealthAide will
'calculate your heart disease risk factor by dividing total cholesterol
'by HDL cholesterol. A ratio of 3.5 or less is desireable but may vary
'with age and other factors. Strive for less than 3.5 anyway. You can
'measure your progress by having this test done regularly (6 months to
'a year unless your Doctor suggests differently).
'.bl1.in5
'If you don't know your blood pressure reading, you can remedy that
'the next time you go shopping. Many supermarkets and drug stores
'have an electronic blood pressure tester and scales to weigh yourself.
'You should check your blood pressure weekly and update the profile.
'Average about 6 to 8 weeks readings for a better picture of your

'"ENTER" the date of your last exam and update this record after each
'subsequent Doctor visit.
'.bl1.pf3.nf
'Correcting Mistakes
'.bl1.pf0.fi.in5
'Once you have "ENTERED" data, you must answer the rest of the questions
'before you can make corrections. When all data has been entered, you
'will be asked:
'.bl1.pf6.ceIS THIS CORRECT (Y/N)
'.bl1.pf0.fi.in5
'To correct any mistakes you may have made, "PRESS" N (for NO) and you
'will be prompted for the line number you wish to correct. "ENTER" the
'line number containing the mistake. That line will be cleared and the
'cursor positioned at the beginning of the line to accept your new data.
'(While typing in data, and before pressing "ENTER", you may use the
'backspace key to back over and re-type characters.) When you have
'typed in the correct data and pressed "ENTER", you will be prompted to
'"ENTER" other lines to correct. If you are satisfied with the data
'on all lines, press "ENTER" (without typing in a number). Answer the
'prompt "IS THIS CORRECT (Y/N)" with a Y (for YES) and the data
'will be saved in a file called "PROFILE.HAF" on your designated data
'drive.
'.bl1.in5
'Your Profile Analysis will then roll down the screen like a window shade.
'It will indicate your "median ideal weight". This is calculated for the
'non-existent, "average", person from weight tables. You will note that
'this is an "approximate analysis". No two persons are alike. Some of
'the weight tables consulted listed a weight range of 15 pounds or more.
'Think of this as your initial goal. Considering the range mentioned,
'two or three pounds, either way, is okay. After all, the future of
'Tennessee is not at stake here. You will have a good indication of
'when you reach your ideal weight by the way your clothes fit and the
'way you look. Incidentally, if your current weight is the same as
'your median ideal weight, HealthAide will know and comment.
'.bl1.in5
'The analysis also tells you if you are over-weight or under-weight
'and by the number of pounds. It will calculate your daily calorie
'needs to maintain your current weight and to maintain your ideal
'weight. HealthAide calculates a daily calorie level needed to reach
'your median ideal weight based on a maximum weight change of
'2 1/2 pounds per week and a minimum daily calorie level of 1000
'calories. The figures are based on height, weight, sex, age and activity
'level and apply to adults only.
'.bl1.in5
'The next section suggests goals based on recommendations of national
'institutions. Protein requirement is calculated on your median ideal
'weight.
'.pa
'.bl1.in5
'The final section is the calculation of your heart disease risk factor
'(if you provided total cholesterol and total HDL cholesterol figures).
'If not, you will see "N/A" displayed.
'.bl1.pf3.in5
'At this point, you will be offered the options to use "Shift-PrtSc" to
'copy the screen to your printer or to "PRESS" any key to return to
'the HealthAide menu.
'.bl1.in5
'In the future, when you select "PROFILE ANALYSIS" from the HealthAide
'Menu, your last recorded personal data will be displayed. To up-date
'the information, simply answer "N" to the question "IS THIS CORRECT
'(Y/N)" and follow the prompt to change data as explained above in
'Making Corrections.
'.pa
'.bl1.pf8.ceENTER DAILY CONSUMPTION
'.bl2.pf0.in5.fi
'From your HealthAide Menu, "PRESS" the number, 2, and you will be
'quickly presented with the Menu of Food Categories. There are 12
'general categories with 50 food selections each. There are several
'reasons for limiting the number of foods in each category which are,
'primarily, associated with speed of operation. In addition, the
'people of North America enjoy the largest variety of foods available
'to any country in the World, yet we, generally, eat the same 50 foods,
'in various combinations, each week. The problem here is, everyone
'has his or her own, different, 50 foods in their daily bill of fare.
'Therefore, I ask you to consider the food files as representative.
'.bl1.pf6.in5
'(If you like the program and choose to fully register your ownership,
'you will receive among the six free programs, FoodAide, which allows
'you to delete the foods you never eat and to add your own special
'list of foods. If you do not use the program, then customizing the
'databases is unimportant.)
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'When you "PRESS" 2 from the HealthAide Menu, you will first be asked:
'.bl1.pf6.ceIS THIS A CONTINUATION (Y/N)
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'If you are adding foods to a total of foods already entered, you
'would "PRESS" Y. Your previous totals would be loaded from your
'DAILY.HAF file and the values of all subsequent food selections
'added to this running total. This allows you to enter your
'breakfast meal, then, perhaps later, add the foods you had for lunch
'and dinner. Or, if you wish, you could average your daily consumption
'for up to 1 week by continually adding to the total. Whenever you
'have a food list loaded (active) you can see the total values by
'"PRESSING" F1 (Function key #1) and, from that total, average for the
'number of days represented by the total of food values. But we are
'getting ahead...
'.bl1.in5
'Initially, you will have made no entries so you would "PRESS" N in
'response to this question. Anytime you start a new day (or other
'period), you would answer N to avoid adding prior totals to the
'current entries.
'.bl1.in5
'Having responded to this query, you may now select a food category
'to enter the foods you have eaten. For instance, if you had cereal
'with skim milk and artificial sweetener and black coffee for
'breakfast, you would have to select from 4 categories to enter this
'meal: Grains - for the cereal; Dairy - for the skim milk; Beverages -
'for the coffee; and Miscellaneous - for the sweetener.
'.pa
'.bl1.nf.pf6
'The Food File
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'After selecting a category, say, Dairy, the file will be loaded with
'a count of records displayed on the screen. When loaded, the first
'page of the file starting with the first record is displayed with
'a few pertinent descriptions and values of each. Reading the screen,
'you will see that you can "PRESS" PgDn to see the next page, End to
'see the last page, or S to "ENTER" a food selection number, or Esc
'(Escape) to return to the Food Menu. You may also "PRESS" Home for
'the start of the file, or PgUp for the preceding page. If you are on
'the first page and record 1 is displayed, "PRESSING" Home or PgUp will
'generate a beep and a message in the upper right corner of the screen,
'"Start of File". Conversly, if you are on the last page and the last
'record displayed is followed by the word "End", in red, and you "PRESS"
'End or PgDn, a beep will sound and the message "End of File" displayed.
'Otherwise, "PRESSING" Home takes you to the first page, End takes you
'to the last page, PgDn takes you to the next page and PgUp takes you
'to the preceding page.
'.bl1.in5
'"PRESSING" F1 will display a running total of food value entries with
'33 different values listed along with the percentage of calories from
'fat and carbohydrates. You will be given an opportunity to average
'the totals each time you press F1. "PRESS" Y if you want to average
'the totals or N to return to the Food List.
'.bl1.in5
'If you "PRESS" Y (to average the totals), you will be asked for the
'number of days to average the totals. At this point, you may "ENTER"
'the number of days or "ENTER" 0 (zero) to cancel - that will take you
'back to the Food List.
'.bl1.pf6.nf
'FOOD LIST COLOR CODES
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'You will notice that some food records are printed on the food list
'in green, some in yellow and others in red. These are keys to Fat,
'Sodium and Cholesterol content of a serving of the respective food.
'Green means that neither Fat, Sodium nor Cholesterol, per serving, is
'excessive. Yellow means that one or more of these categories is
'moderately high. Red signifies a high amount of one or more of these
'categories. To discover what generated the warning color, "PRESS" S
'to select that food and then "ENTER" the number of the food. You will
'see a display of the various nutrient values of the food with the
'item(s) in question flashing in yellow, for moderately high, or red
'for high, per serving. In the lower, right corner of the display,
'the percentage of calories from fat per serving of this food is
'displayed. At the bottom of the display is the question:
'.bl1.pf3.ceIS THIS THE ITEM YOU WANTED (Y/N)?
'.pa
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'If you are "just looking", "PRESS" N. This is a protection against
'errors from mis-typing and also lets you look, without recording,
'a foods' values. You must either confirm the selection by "PRESSING"
'Y or deny it by "PRESSING" N. A yes response will drop in a serving
'guide and the prompt will ask you:
'.bl1.pf3
'.ceENTER THE NUMBER OF PORTIONS CONSUMED OR "0" TO CANCEL
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'You may enter whole and fractional servings. For instance, if the
'standard serving size is 6 ounces and you consumed 8 ounces, you
'would "ENTER" 1.33 for the amount consumed. After entering the
'number of servings, the values are added to the running total and
'the food list is displayed once again. A 0 (zero) entry will cancel.
'To delete a food from the daily total, enter a minus sign (-) before
'the number of portions. Be sure to enter the same portion number!
'.bl1.in5
'When you have selected and entered all the foods you have consumed in
'a particular food category, "PRESS" Escape to return to the Food Menu.
'.bl1.in5
'As you continue to add foods from the various food files, the total
'of all the food values remain in memory. When you finish a session,
'the totals will be saved to the DAILY.HAF file. This file may be
'recalled in a future session if you indicate that your selections
'in the next session are a "CONTINUATION".
'When finished, "ENTER" the number 13 to return to the HealthAide Menu.
'Your totals will automatically be saved when you select # 13.
'.bl1.in5.fi
'Remember, your most recent food totals are saved and will remain in
'the DAILY.HAF file until you start a new total by answering with an
'N to the question: "IS THIS A CONTINUATION (Y/N)" and by entering
'new foods. The file is not over-written until you actually select
'a food, accept it and enter a number of servings greater than 0.
'.bl1.in5
'You can see by the entry process that you must keep track of
'everything you eat and the amounts of each food. A ham and cheese
'sandwich on wheat bread with mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato becomes:
'.bl1.pf3.in10.nf
'2 whole wheat bread (Grains)
'.in10
'1 slice of ham (Redmeat)
'.in10
'1 slice of cheese (Dairy)
'.in10
'1/4 Tomato (Vegetables)
'.in10
'2 leaves of lettuce (Vegetables)
'.in10
'1 TBSP Mayonnaise (Spreads)
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'The FoodAide program lets you manually combine the values of all
'these items and store it as "SANDWICH, HAM & CHEESE", in say, the
'miscellaneous category (or Fast Food, etc.). This greatly reduces
'the time for entering daily consumption.
'.pa
'.pf6.nf
'AVERAGING
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'This is a useful and important aspect of HealthAide and one of the
'philosophies behind it. For weight control, your "average" daily
'calories remove some of the hassle from maintaining a strict level
'of calories daily. Let's assume, for our example, that you are
'trying to lose weight. You faithfully enter your daily food
'consumption every day and you are maintaining the fat, calorie,
'fiber, carbohydrate, etc., goals you have set. Then, one evening,
'you get a call from a neighbor to join them in a little celebration.
'So, you go to the party. You have something to drink, perhaps a few
'finger sandwiches or other snacks. You are careful to remember what
'you ate (without making notes at the party), and you estimate a
'little. When you get home, you enter the foods you ate and, lo and
'behold, you exceeded you daily calorie allowance. No problem!
'.bl1.in5
'Cut back on calories the next day by concentrating on fruits,
'vegetables and grains. When you enter these foods, be sure to
'"PRESS" Y when asked about Continuation. This will let you add
'todays' foods to yesterdays' and average the two days. Do this
'by entering all your foods consumed. Then "PRESS" F1 for totals
'and answer Y to the question about averaging. When you "ENTER"
'2 for the number of days to average, you will get the total in
'every value category divided by 2 and percentages recalculated.
'If the two day average is within your preset goals, you are back
'on track again. You can actually average for 7 days at a time but
'that is counter-productive. If you average 500 calories per day
'over your current weight calorie maintenance level, you will be
'rewarded with a 1 pound gain in weight at your weekly weigh-in.
'.bl1.in5
'Follow your profile suggestions and you will achieve your ideal
'weight. Of course, the more you have to gain or lose, the longer
'it may take. That's okay because steady weight change following
'healthy eating habits is preferable to rapid weight change which
'tends to reverse itself.
'.bl1.pf6.nf
'Meal Planning
'.bl1.pf0.in5.fi
'There is a feature of HealthAide that was not designed for the
'program but turned out to be one of those "serendipitous
'lagniappes" (a fortunate discovery of a small gift or a pleasant,
'unexpected, something extra).
'.bl1.in5
'Anytime that you are not carrying forward a food totals balance,
10010 'you may select foods which you plan to prepare and serve and view
'the nutrient totals, per serving, for the meal. For example,
'suppose you were going to serve boneless, skinless, roasted,
'chicken breast; steamed brocolli; mashed potatoes; cranberry
'sauce and fat-free, cholesterol-free, ice cream substitute as
'dessert.
'.bl1.in5
